McAfee, a popular antivirus company, will have to refund customers who were unsubscribed following a ruling by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority.
This ruling was made in response to a super-complaint by Citizens Advice, which was filed following multiple consumer complaints that their subscriptions were auto-renewed without them consenting.
McAfee will allow customers to unsubscribe from the service and request a refund for any remaining months. In 2020, McAfee will also be accepting refunds for similar complaints. cancel mcafee subscription The company will have to do more than simply refund customers who ask for their money back. It will also need to improve the way it communicates prices and services going forward.
McAfee stated that it should be more transparent about how it charges for auto-renewals and what it charges, particularly regarding the price increase in the second year.
Andrea Cosell, chief executive of CMA, stated that people should not be tied to auto-renewal contracts for products they don't need or want.
Subscriptions should be clear and easy to cancel. Customers should not be tied into auto-renewals that are ongoing without adequate refund rights.
Customer experience improvement
McAfee saw the decision as an opportunity for improvement and stated in a statement:
"McAfee and the CMA have reached an agreement on the common goal of improving business-to-consumer policies and practices.
"Our collaboration with the CMA was in line with our efforts to ensure that customers have ongoing protection and retain control over their McAfee subscription."
CMA has been pursuing several antivirus companies and questionable renewal practices for some time. Recently, Norton was also taken to court by the CMA for refusing information about its auto-renewal policies.
